Upper House Speaker Calls for Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Cooperation to Be Established on Solid Foundations

Speaker of the House of Councillors, Enaam Mayara, called, Thursday in Rabat, to establish Euro-Mediterranean parliamentary cooperation on solid foundations at the political, economic, cultural and social levels, in order to serve the future of the region and its peoples, and their right to security, peace and overall development. Speaking at the opening of the Summit of Presidents of Member Parliaments of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), held on the occasion of the 17th plenary session of the PA-UfM, Mayara said that the challenges that threaten our Euro-Mediterranean region are numerous, citing in particular climate change, health security, the issue of immigration, human trafficking, organized crime and terrorism, which requires the combined efforts of all in favor of a Union for the Mediterranean that is strong and capable of facing all of these risks. Mayara deplored the persistence of several political and economic obstacles which hinder any real and concrete cooperation between the countries of the region, and prevent them from responding to the aspirations of its peoples, led by young people and women. The speaker of the House of Councillors also expressed his deep regret for the tragic events in the Gaza Strip which put the region in an unprecedented situation and could push the conflict into a phase with unpredictable repercussions. In this context, he called for effective and collective action to enable de-escalation in the Palestinian territories and put an end to the targeting of civilians, affirming in this respect that the Kingdom, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is “fully committed to any effort aimed at realizing the aspirations of the Palestinian people to the establishment of an independent state with East Al-Quds as its capital on the June 4, 1967 borders, in accordance with the two-state solution” and international legality.
