United Nations (New York) – In his latest report to the Security Council on the Moroccan Sahara, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted Morocco’s excellent cooperation and constructive interaction with UN human rights mechanisms, commending the Kingdom’s continued commitment to promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms.
In this regard, Guterres referred to the letters sent by Morocco to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on June 25, 2025, and July 2, 2025, emphasizing that Morocco maintains a sustained and voluntary dialogue with the UN human rights system, through the regular transmission of information to the OHCHR and the hosting of a significant number of UN mandate holders, several of whom have visited the Moroccan Sahara. The Kingdom remains the country that has received the highest number of visits from human rights special procedures in the region. The UN Secretary-General also highlighted the efforts of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), particularly through its regional commissions in Laayoune and Dakhla, which continue their field work promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms in the Kingdom’s southern provinces, handling complaints, and mediating. The report also highlights Morocco’s positive interaction with thematic mandate holders of the UN special procedures. Through this open and ongoing cooperation, Morocco reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the universal values ??of human rights and its commitment to implementing them in the Kingdom’s 12 regions, including the Moroccan Sahara, thus consolidating its role as a credible and responsible actor within the multilateral system.
