Moroccan Sahara: Gabon Reiterates Support for Autonomy Plan under Moroccan Sovereignty

United Nations (New York) – Gabon reaffirmed before the United Nations its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, which constitutes a “serious and credible basis” to resolve the regional dispute around the Moroccan Sahara in respect of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Speaking before the UN 4th Committee in New York, the representative of Gabon renewed her country’s support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, affirming that this initiative “constitutes a serious and credible basis for achieving a negotiated solution while respecting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco”.

This initiative, she noted, offers a “framework consistent with international law, Security Council resolutions and the legitimate aspirations of the populations of the region”.

The diplomat added that her country once again welcomes the adoption of Security Council resolution 2797, which “triggers a new dynamic in the settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara on the exclusive basis of the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty”.

Gabon, she continued, welcomes the significant socio-economic progress made in the Southern Provinces, as well as the Kingdom’s efforts to strengthen human rights and local democratic participation.
