C-24/Sahara: Qatar Reiterates Support for Autonomy Plan, Deems it Constructive

Qatar reaffirmed before the United Nations Committee of 24 (C-24) its support for the Autonomy plan presented by Morocco to reach a final settlement to the regional dispute over the Sahara. This is a “constructive” initiative and a basis for any realistic solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, Qatar’s Deputy Permanent Representative Jassim Sayar Al-Maawda stressed during the annual C-24 meeting in New York. He also commended Morocco’s efforts to promote social and economic development in the Kingdom’s southern provinces. Furthermore, the diplomat expressed his country’s support for the efforts made by the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in order to facilitate achieving a lasting and compromise political solution within the framework of the political process conducted under the aegis of the United Nations, in accordance with Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2654 and in respect of Morocco’s sovereignty.
