The State of Qatar renewed, in New York, its support for Morocco’s Autonomy plan, deeming it a “constructive” initiative and an “objective” basis for any realistic and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. Speaking on Monday before members of the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the representative of Qatar, Jassim Al-Thani expressed his country’s support for the UN Secretary-General’s efforts aimed at reaching a political solution that is sustainable and mutually acceptable within the framework of the process carried out under the aegis of the UN, the relevant Security Council resolutions, in particular resolution 2654, and in respect of Morocco’s sovereignty. The diplomat also welcomed the efforts made by the Personal Envoy of the UNSG for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, expressing the wish to see a definitive and lasting solution to this dispute come to fruition in the interest of all parties and in favor of strengthening stability and cooperation in the region, as well as international peace and security.
