Govt. Measures Limit Impact of ‘Difficult’ Water Situation – Minister –
The measures taken by the government have limited the impact of the current “difficult” water situation in Morocco due to the recurrence of drought waves that affected dam reserves, Equipment and Water Minister Nizar Baraka said Thursday in Rabat. “We are going through a critical phase after three successive drought years”, Baraka underlined at a joint press briefing with Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament, Government Spokesperson, Mustapha Baitas, following the Government Council’s meeting. The minister pointed out that rainfall did not exceed 21mm during the last three months, a 67% decrease compared to the same period of a normal year. He also pointed out that temperatures were high, which also affected the level of evaporation and the state of dams, since water inflows to dams did not exceed 519 million m3 during the last three months compared to 1.5 billion m3 during the same period of 2022. This situation, he explained, has affected the filling rate of dams, which currently stood at 23.5%, compared to 31% during the same period last year.
