Morocco’s Election to UNHRC Strengthens ‘Its Status as Regional Leader’ – Argentinian Press Agency –

Morocco’s election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2024 strengthens “its status as regional leader” and deepens the “disappointment” of its enemies, Argentinian press agency “Alternative Press Agency” wrote on Friday. This election “is the fruit of the policy in human rights and other areas, implemented by HM King Mohammed VI since His enthronement in 1999,” underlined Adalberto Carlos Agozino, author of an opinion article published by the agency under the title: “Another important international achievement for Morocco: Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council”. Recalling the main stages of Morocco’s modernization undertaken by the Sovereign, this specialist in strategic issues noted that HM the King “has endeavored to democratize and modernize an African, Arab and Muslim country, deeply rooted in its customs and traditions”. In this respect, Agozino recalled the creation of the “Equity and Reconciliation Commission” and the constitutional reform of 2011 which strengthened political pluralism and individual freedoms, as well as the reform of the Family Code. He also highlighted Morocco’s return to the African Union and its “unifying leadership on key issues such as interreligious dialogue, tolerance, the fight against racial hatred, the right to a healthy and sustainable environment, migrants’ rights and the impact of new technologies”. “By reviewing this immense heritage built by HM King Mohammed VI during His reign,” he observed, “we clearly understand why the Kingdom continually accumulates international successes and support for the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.” He also said that Morocco’s Presidency of the UN Human Rights Council “represents a significant blow” to its enemies, especially since the Kingdom secured a sweeping victory (30 to 17), despite the pressure and diplomatic maneuvers of Algeria and South Africa”.
