Royal Speech, ‘Global Roadmap’ to Address Water Scarcity – Spanish Researcher –

His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s Speech on the 25th Throne Day anniversary is a “global roadmap” to address water scarcity, said Carlos Uriarte Sánchez, Spanish researcher and professor at the Rey Juan Carlos University. “It is a very important speech that sheds light on the water scarcity issue and outlines a water policy to deal with the six consecutive years of drought in Morocco,” stated the professor. His Majesty the King emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to better implement the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program 2020-2027 and to adopt innovative policy in this area, he added. According to Sánchez, this program, which aims to ensure drinking water to all citizens and to supply at least 80% of the national territory with irrigation water, will “strengthen the country’s resilience to climate hazards and disruptions.” He notedthat accelerating the construction of seawater desalination plants and utilizing this vital resource in a sustainable and efficient manner are relevant strategies to ensure the Kingdom’s water security. By 2030, Morocco will be able to meet its drinking water needs, irrigate vast agricultural areas, while ensuring its food security thanks to this Royal policy, said the academic.
