Morocco to Launch 5G Ahead of 2025 AFCON, 2030 World Cup – Minister
Minister Delegate to the Head of Government for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni announced on Monday in Rabat that the fifth generation of cellular technology (5G) is set to be launched in Morocco in anticipation of hosting the African Cup of Nations football tournament (AFCON 2025) and the 2030 World Cup. The launch of 5G technology aims to cover 25% of the population by 2026 and 70% by 2030, with full coverage of the cities that will host the 2030 World Cup matches, the Minister said in her response to a question on “digital services in mountainous areas”, during question time at the House of Representatives. El Fallah Seghrouchni also announced that a total of 6,300 public administrative structures would be equipped with optical fiber by 2026, and 5.6 million households by 2030. In the same context, the Minister noted that digital services are among the priorities for the promotion of the telecommunications sector in Morocco, emphasizing the efforts made by various stakeholders to develop and strengthen the sector’s infrastructure. The government, she added, is supporting operators in the sector through investment agreements, pointing out that the total invested in support of national digital transformation projects has exceeded 8.4 billion dirhams in 2023.
