U.S. Reaffirmation of Morocco's Sovereignty Over Its Sahara Sends 'Strong' Message Reflecting Truth, Reality on Ground - Heritage Foundation
Washington – The United States’ reaffirmation of its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara sends “a strong message that upholds the truth and reality on the ground” and “paves the way for peace and regional stability,” said David Aaronson, an American expert from the Washington-based think tank, The Heritage Foundation.

This “strong” statement renews the positive momentum created notably by the 2020 tripartite agreement and “paves the way for peace and regional stability,” Aaronson told MAP, in response to the United States’ reaffirmation of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, confirming the position communicated by President Donald Trump to His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

During a meeting on Tuesday in Washington between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the latter “reiterated that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.”

Aaronson emphasized that the U.S., under President Trump’s leadership, had recognized Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara, an impetus subsequently followed by many other countries, he said.

Under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI and U.S. President Donald Trump, Moroccan-American relations are “promised a brighter future,” the analyst added.

He noted, in this regard, that the two countries “share common interests and values, particularly a strong commitment to peace, security, and prosperity.”

“Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States in 1777. It is the only African country to have signed a free trade agreement with the United States,” he recalled, emphasizing that this relationship is “solid and will undoubtedly continue to develop in all areas.”

For the Middle East specialist, the tripartite agreement is “a key example of this cooperation, as is the military exercise African Lion.”
