AU-PSC, UN Bodies Joint Meetings Conclude in New York with Morocco’s Participation

United Nations (New York) – The proceedings of the joint meetings between the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), held from October 21 to 23 in New York, have concluded with the participation of the Kingdom of Morocco.
The Moroccan delegation, led by the Kingdom of Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the AU and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Mohammed Arrouchi, took part in the discussions dedicated to African priorities regarding peace and security, peacebuilding, and strengthening cooperation between the AU and the United Nations.
During the 11th informal joint seminar between the PSC and the UNSC, Morocco served, on behalf of the PSC, as the keynote speaker on the theme “Youth, Peace, and Security.” On this occasion, Arrouchi highlighted the contribution of African youth to conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding, while emphasizing the importance of strengthening their participation in decision-making processes and promoting their economic empowerment.
The Ambassador also spoke, on behalf of the PSC, on the protection of children affected by armed conflicts, calling for continental commitments to be translated into concrete actions, for cooperation between the AU and the UN to be strengthened, and for the promotion of the protection, rehabilitation, and reintegration of children associated with armed groups.
Furthermore, the PSC members held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations dedicated to the African continent’s priorities regarding peace, security, and stability, as well as the challenges of cooperation between the AU and the UN in these areas.
These meetings also provided an opportunity to address the challenges related to peacebuilding in Africa, notably the financing of peacebuilding efforts and national ownership of initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable peace on the continent.
