ISIS Affiliate Arrested in Northeastern Morocco Over Subversive Plots Targetting Kingdom

Rabat – Judicial police in Berkane, Northeastern Morocco, on Thursday arrested an ISIS-affiliate member who was plotting subversive plans targetting the Kingdom.

The apprehension is part of the continued efforts, based on intelligence by the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), undertaken to combat the risks of extremism and prevent terrorist threats targetting the Kingdom’s security and citizens’ safety, according to the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ).

Preliminary investigation along with spinning operations reveal that the suspect has recently pledged allegiance to the alleged amir of ISIS, in view of implementing the terror plans seeking to jeopardize the safety of people, public order and vital facilities, as part of the “lone wolf” terrorism, after he had failed to join the organization in the Sahel.

The suspect has been placed in police custody, pending judicial investigation carried out by the BCIJ, under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office in charge of terrorist affairs, in order to identify the extremist activities attributed to him as well as any potential links to other terrorist organizations operating both in Morocco and abroad.
