Sahara: Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies Reiterates Support for Autonomy Plan within Framework of Morocco’s Sovereignty
The Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies reiterated its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara, which “is the only credible and serious basis for a definitive solution within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in accordance with the parameters defined by the Security Council (SC) of the United Nations”. In its statement N°892, the legislative institution welcomes the new resolution of the UN SC and expresses its support to the efforts of the UN Secretary General and his new Personal Envoy “to reach a realistic, pragmatic, sustainable and compromise-based political solution to the regional dispute” over the Moroccan Sahara. It insisted that “the format of the political process must be that of round tables under the auspices of the United Nations with the participation, in good faith, of the parties to the conflict, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and polisario”, urging these protagonists “to engage more in this process and to cooperate fully with the UN SG and with each other, in order to move towards a mutually acceptable political solution”. In addition, the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies welcomes “Morocco’s commitment to the ceasefire agreements and the political process”, calling on the other parties “to prevail the sense of responsibility and moderation and show determination to facilitate the mission of the UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy to end this conflict and preserve the region from any tension or destabilization attempts”. The Paraguayan deputies expressed their “concern after the announcement by the armed group of the polisario of the breach of the ceasefire, as well as the unilateral decision of Algeria to break its bilateral relations with Morocco and not to recognize the UN Security Council Resolution No. 2602”. Finally, the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay expressed its “support for the call of the United Nations to organize, as soon as possible, a census of the populations of the Tindouf camps in order to ensure the protection of the populations of these camps”.
