UN: Palestinian Association Highlights Growing International Support for Moroccanness of Sahara
The president of the Palestinian-Moroccan Friendship Association, Mohamed Ziyad al-Jabari, highlighted, in New York, the growing international support for Morocco’s legitimate rights to its Sahara. Speaking on Wednesday before the members of the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, al-Jabari underlined that the Kingdom has made “positive achievements” regarding the national cause. He referred here to the recognition by the United States of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, and the support of several countries such as Germany and Spain to the Autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom. For all these countries, Morocco’s Autonomy initiative is the “solid basis” for achieving a definitive, just and mutually acceptable political solution to this regional dispute, within the framework of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco, he noted, recalling that a significant number of countries have decided to inaugurate consulates general in the cities of Laâyoune and Dakhla. The speaker called on all parties to the conflict, including Algeria, to show wisdom and engage in the round table process under the auspices of the United Nations to reach a definitive settlement to this artificial regional dispute on the basis of the Moroccan Autonomy initiative. Referring to Moroccan-Palestinian relations, al-Jabari recalled that His Majesty King Mohammed VI reaffirmed the constant position regarding the justness of the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people to establish their independent State, while emphasizing that the Kingdom places the Palestinian question at the same level as the question of the Moroccan Sahara. During this session, the speaker denounced the actions made by the armed separatist militias of the “polisario” which violate UN Security Council resolutions and represent a threat to peace and security in the region.
