AU PSC Reiterates Responsibility of Refugee Camp-Host Countries to Collaborate with International Agencies in Documenting Refugees

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has once again reiterated the responsibility of host countries of refugee camps, to collaborate with pertinent international organs and agencies in the documentation of refugees in order to avoid diversion of humanitarian assistance and avoid their exploitation for political purposes and their militarization.    In a communique adopted at the end of a meeting dedicated to collaboration between the AU and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) following the Extraordinary Humanitarian Summit and the Malabo Pledging Conference: Translating promises into reality, the PSC recalled its previous decisions on humanitarian actions, notably the communiqué [PSC/PR/COMM.1083 (2022)] adopted at its 1083rd meeting, held on May 9, 2022.    In this communique, the PSC “reiterates the responsibility of host countries of refugee camps, to collaborate with pertinent international organs and agencies in the documentation of refugees in order to protect their basic rights, avoid diversion of humanitarian assistance, ensure proper access to food avoid their exploitation for political purposes, militarization and transformation into agents of terrorism and organized crimes”.
