A Historic Victory: Morocco Assumes the Presidency of the UN Human Rights Council for 2024

Morocco achieves a historic breakthrough by assuming the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the year 2024, following a vote held on Wednesday in Geneva. Out of the 47 Council members, 30 supported Morocco’s candidacy, surpassing that of South Africa, which only garnered 17 votes, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans residing abroad.
This election marks a first in Morocco’s history at the helm of this prestigious UN body, demonstrating international recognition for the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in the protection and promotion of human rights.
Under the leadership of His Majesty the King, Morocco has made an irreversible choice in favor of the rule of law and respect for human rights, as evidenced by the 2011 Constitution. This commitment is manifested through a continuous series of reforms aimed at consolidating democracy, promoting gender equality, ensuring social and territorial justice, achieving the full effectiveness of human rights, as well as fostering inclusive participation and empowering youth, as emphasized in the statement.
Morocco’s election, despite the mobilization of Algeria and South Africa against it, also illustrates the confidence and credibility inspired by Morocco’s external action under royal impetus in Africa, on the international stage, and within the multilateral system.
The Kingdom of Morocco, having played a recognized role within the Human Rights Council, particularly in the foundational development processes of this organ, expresses joy for the trust placed in it. It sees this as a strong signal from the international community in favor of its constructive approach and unifying leadership on key issues such as interreligious dialogue, tolerance, combating racial hatred, the right to a healthy and sustainable environment, the rights of migrants, and the impact of new technologies.
During its presidency, the Kingdom will remain faithful to the approach maintained during its three terms on the Human Rights Council, always prioritizing dialogue, unity, and consensus. It aims to actively continue, with the Council members and all regional groups, the strengthening and promotion of this crucial organ within the UN human rights system, as concluded in the statement.
