Amazigh New Year Celebration Is for All Moroccans – Government Chief

Amazigh New Year celebrations, in line with HM King Mohammed VI’s decision to establish it as an official paid national holiday, provides an opportunity to showcase a cultural heritage embraced by all Moroccans, affirmed Aziz Akhannouch, the Head of Government, in Agadir on Friday. “Today, from Agadir, we’re celebrating the Amazigh New Year, signifying a heritage of significant importance not just for the Amazigh people but for all Moroccans,” emphasized Akhannouch in a press statement marking the Amazigh New Year 2974. The Head of Government pointed out that this year’s celebration of the Amazigh New Year holds a “distinct character” following the Royal decision to establish it as an official paid public holiday, within the constitutional recognition of the Amazigh language. The decision by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to make the Amazigh New Year an official paid national holiday, akin to the first day of the Islamic Hijri year and the New Year of the Gregorian calendar, further underscores the high regard in which the Sovereign consistently holds the Amazigh language as an essential component of the rich and diverse Moroccan identity, a shared heritage for all Moroccans without exception. It also aligns with the constitutional recognition of the Amazigh language as an official language of the country, alongside the Arabic language.
