Brazilian Senate Adopts Motion Supporting Moroccan Sahara Autonomy Plan
The Brazilian Senate adopted, on Tuesday, a motion in support of the Moroccan autonomy initiative in the Sahara, calling for “more expressive” support for the Kingdom’s “serious and reliable” efforts to find a solution to this regional conflict. “Brazil has always taken a constructive and sensible stance on this regional conflict. The time is right for our country to consider the autonomy proposal put forward by Morocco as a realistic and pragmatic basis for a political solution in line with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”, according to the motion signed by 28 Brazilian senators from different political backgrounds. The climate of trust that exists between Morocco and Brazil “will be further strengthened by Brazil’s more expressive support within the UN Security Council for Morocco’s serious and reliable efforts to find a consensual and peaceful political solution to the regional Sahara conflict”, the motion stressed. In the motion approved at plenary session, the Brazilian senators express their “support for the Kingdom of Morocco in its efforts to find a consensual, peaceful and lasting political solution to the Sahara regional conflict, thanks to the efforts made in this respect by this country”. “We consider that a favorable position by Brazil will open up a very ambitious prospect for the two countries to continue building a multifaceted and mutually beneficial strategic partnership”, noted the Brazilian Senate. The motion emphasized that “Brazil and Morocco are developing, in a spirit of trust and mutual respect, a multifaceted strategic partnership. This partnership is based on the values of tolerance and openness that the two countries share, as well as on their common vision of the opportunities and challenges of the contemporary world”. Thus, “the two countries have great potential for cooperation in a number of areas, principally food safety”, stressed the Brazilian senators, adding that in recent years, Brazil and Morocco have put in place a legal framework covering several sectors, such as investment facilitation, defense, double taxation, customs cooperation, digital transition, professional training and scientific research, among others. The motion was presented by senator Hiran Manuel Gonçalves da Silva, of the Progressive Party, who underlined during the plenary session “the improvement in the climate of trust and cooperation between Brazil and Morocco in several areas”. This situation, according to the senator, “could be strengthened by Brazil’s support, within the UN Security Council, “for Morocco’s serious and reliable efforts to find a consensual and peaceful political solution to the regional Sahara conflict”.
