Moroccan Sahara: Guatemala supports Morocco’s autonomy plan as the basis for a definitive solution to the Sahara dispute

Guatemala considers the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 as a realistic, credible, and serious basis for achieving a definitive resolution to the Sahara dispute, while respecting the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty. This was affirmed on Tuesday in Rabat by Monica Bolaños, the Guatemalan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement to the press following her meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, Ms. Bolaños clarified that the solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara rests on this autonomy plan, within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Guatemalan official also reiterated her country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s efforts to reach a political, peaceful, sustainable, and mutually acceptable solution to the issue.

She further highlighted that the opening of the Guatemalan General Consulate in Dakhla in December 2022 marked a significant step in strengthening the bilateral relations between the two nations.
