C-24: Dominica Stresses that Sahara has Transformed, thanks to Morocco’s Efforts, into Prosperous Region

Dominica affirmed, Monday before the UN Committee of 24, that thanks to Morocco’s efforts in terms of economic investments and infrastructure development, the Sahara has transformed into a “prosperous region”. The population of the Sahara benefits, like other regions of Morocco, from major investment projects, said Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the UN, adding that her country “welcomes investments aimed at improving the living conditions of the populations of the Sahara and their empowerment”. The Caribbean country also commended the Kingdom’s “significant progress” in the area of human rights, in particular the strengthening of the role of the Regional Commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Laayoune and Dakhla, bilateral cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the special procedures of the Human Rights Council, recalling that these advances have been welcomed by the Security Council in several resolutions. The representative of Dominica expressed, on this occasion, the “full support” of her government for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, which aims to definitively resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara “for the well-being of the whole region”. “By putting this initiative on the table, Morocco has fully assumed its responsibilities in response to repeated calls from the Security Council for a realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution, based on compromise,” said the diplomat.
