Morocco’s Presidency of UNHRC, ‘Great Diplomatic Success’ – Italian Expert –
Morocco’s election to the Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2024 is a “great success” of the Kingdom’s diplomacy, which is “highly committed” to promoting human rights, Italian expert Domenico Letizia said. This “historic” election is a “resounding diplomatic success” for Morocco, which adds to a “series of important successes” achieved during the previous year, Letizia told MAP. Recalling that out of the 47 UNHCR members, 30 supported Morocco’s candidacy over South Africa, which received only 17 votes, the Italian expert in international relations noted that Morocco is “highly committed” to promoting human rights and the principles of the rule of law. He also highlighted the major advances made by the Kingdom in this field, particularly in the fight against violence against women, adding that the reforms undertaken by Morocco in this regard are “largely welcomed”. Morocco on Wednesday secured the Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2024 in a vote held in Geneva, receiving support from 30 out of the 47 council members.
